Analysis of variables influencing depressive emotions of adolescents

Abstract
The purpose of the study was to investigate the variables influencing depressive emotions of adolescents. The subjects were 301 middle school students and 456 high school students. Correlations and multiple regressions were implemented to answer the research questions. The dependent variable was the scores of Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale(CES-D). The independent variables were the scores of Korean-Revised Children¡¯s Manifest Anxiety Scale(RCMAS), Korean-Children¡¯s Automatic Thoughts Scale(K-CATS), Self-Efficacy Scale(SES), gender, age, and the level of academic achievement. The results of the study were as follows: (a) anxiety, negative automatic thoughts, self-efficacy, gender, and age had impact on the depressive emotions of adolescents. The higher the scores of anxiety and negative automatic thoughts, the higher the scores of depressive emotions. The higher the scores of self-efficacy, the lower the scores of depressive emotions. The scores of depressive emotions of female adolescents were higher than those of male adolescents. In addition, the older adolescents, the higher the scores of depressive emotions; (b) Two factors of negative automatic thoughts-depression, social anxiety-had impact on the depressive emotions of adolescents. That is, the higher the scores of negative automatic thoughts, the higher the scores of depressive emotions; (c) Both general self-efficacy and social self-efficacy had impact on the depressive emotions of adolescents. That is, the higher the scores of self-efficacy, the lower the scores of depressive emotions.
